Extra Curricular Activities

Scoil Mhuire promotes a wide variety of activities as part of its extra-curricular programme.

The Homework Club runs four days a week and this combines the pupil’s academic work with a sporting or a computer based activity.

Gaelic games continue to play a role in the life of Scoil Mhuire. Each year, pupils have the opportunity to represent the school in inter-school Gaelic football leagues, taking part in matches and developing their skills, teamwork and enjoyment of the game.

Our rounders teams have enjoyed success over the years. In 2011 the girls were the Division 1 Runners Up. In 2012, we did one better and became Division 1 champions.

Olympic Handball is a popular activity at Scoil Mhuire, with pupils taking part in games during lunchtime throughout the school year. During Term 3, pupils can put their skills into practice by taking part in our in-school Olympic Handball League. Teams compete throughout the term, with the winning teams receiving trophies and medals in recognition of their achievement. The whole school comes together to watch the exciting final, creating a wonderful atmosphere and celebrating the pupils’ efforts. Pupils also have the opportunity to represent Scoil Mhuire in matches against other schools, providing them with valuable experience of playing competitively and working as part of a team.

Chess Club runs at various times during the school year during lunchtime, providing pupils with the opportunity to learn, play and develop their skills in the game of chess. The club encourages children to think strategically, solve problems and develop concentration and patience, while also enjoying the challenge of playing against their peers.

Over the past year the Green Schools Committee has promoted recycling, gardening, litter picking, water and electricity reduction and generally highlighted environmental issues. The Green flag for primary schools has been awarded to Scoil Mhuire 3 times, the latest being in May 2013.We have now been awarded International Green Flags for Litter and Waste, Electricity, Water and are starting to work on our 4th flag for travel.
