2nd Class Caterpillars

Second class enjoyed watching their butterflies metamorphose from caterpillars into fully grown butterflies over the last few weeks.

We all watched as the larvae ate lots, grew and moulted (shed their exoskeleton). Eventually, they started to make their way up to the top of their jars to form a 'j' shape.

They began to pupate and after a day or so they had formed their chrysalises. After a week or so the chrysalises broke open and out came the butterflies.

Their wings were crumpled at first and they had to dry before the butterflies could fly.

We released them all in the garden beside our class.
